About the Executive Council

Many voters ask, "What Is the Executive Council and

Why Does it Matter to Me?"

The Executive Council of New Hampshire

The Executive Council, otherwise known as the Governor's Council,  is unique to the state of New Hampshire. It's a five-member body representing 5 districts that serves as a check on the power of the governor. While the governor is the state's chief executive, the Executive Council has significant influence over the state budget and major gubernatorial actions.

The Executive Council's responsibilities include approving the appointments of state commissioners, judges, and other key state positions. It also approves all state and federal contracts over $10,000—essentially, it holds the checkbook. This arrangement ensures that decisions made by the governor have oversight and input from multiple elected officials, reflecting the democratic principles of checks and balances.

Members of the Executive Council are elected to two-year terms from five geographic districts in the state. The councilors often act as liaisons between the governor's office and the communities they represent, advocating for the needs and concerns of their constituents.

Overall, the Executive Council of New Hampshire serves as a crucial mechanism for ensuring that the governor's actions align with the interests of the people and the principles of good governance.
